New “Balanced” Supercomputing System at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute—the Most Powerful University-Based Supercomputer in New York State and the Northeast—Positions the University for Continued Leadership and Impact in Massively Parallel Computational and Data Analytics Research, Innovation, and Education

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute today unveiled a new petascale supercomputing system, the Advanced Multiprocessing Optimized System, or AMOS.

With the ability to perform more than one quadrillion (1015) calculations per second, AMOS is the most powerful university-based supercomputer in New York state and the Northeast, and among the most powerful in the world. In addition to massive computational power, AMOS has high-performance networking capabilities with a bandwidth of more than four terabytes per second—more than the combined bandwidth of 2 million home Internet subscribers.

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Professor and Council co-Chair of the international Research Data Alliance Francine Berman joined with Google Vice President Vint Cerf to discuss the future of public access to research data in a Science magazine Op Ed appearing Aug 9. “Who Will Pay for Public Access to Research Data?” appears in the Policy Forum section of Science – a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science – and discusses the growing call for greater public access to data resulting from taxpayer sponsored research.

    Francine Berman, a professor in the computer science department at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was elected a AAAS Fellow "for distinguished contributions to the field of computer science and community leadership in data cyber-infrastructure, digital data preservation, and high performance computing." A former chair of the AAAS section representing Information, Computing, and Communication, Berman was delighted to learn that she has been elected a AAAS Fellow.

    Watson is entering his sophomore year at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and as the supercomputer’s role continues to evolve,Watson may never graduate. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York was the first university to receive a Watson system, made famous by beating “Jeopardy” champions in 2011. IBM Corp. sent a modified Watson system to Rensselaer in January 2013.

  • Ulcer-causing bacteria baffled by mucus: Viscoelasticity impact on collective behavior of swimming microorganisms

    "In the human body, microorganisms are always moving around in mucus, saliva, and other systems that exhibit elasticity due to the presence of polymers. Our study is among the first to look at how this elasticity impacts the collective behavior of microorganisms like H. pylori. What we found is that polymers do in fact have a substantial impact on the flows created by the swimming bacteria, which in turn makes it more difficult for the individual bacteria to coordinate with each other. This opens the door to new ways of looking at our immune system."

  • HyGie-Tech USA receives nod to use RPI supecomputer

    HyGie-Tech USA said Thursday that it has received approval from New York state to use the supercomputer clusters at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the RPI Technology Park. HyGie-Tech, which is located on Wolf Road in Colonie, New York, sells modeling and simulation software and services to companies and organizations concerned about airborne contamination and exposure to chemical, biological and other hazardous materials.
